    Annual Report for 2018

Healthcare as amazing as their potential

Dear Friends and Supporters,

Children’s of Alabama had a very positive year in 2018.

We saw a higher patient volume than anticipated, and our staff, as they always do, rose to the occasion, taking great care of Alabama‚Äôs sick and injured kids. Our total employee count grew to a high of 4,999, and in 2019, our nonclinical support staff will return to our campus in the new James C. Lee III Building — and parking deck — now under construction. Our Foundation had a record non-capital campaign year with philanthropic gifts topping $20 million thanks to overwhelming and much appreciated community support.

We’re proud of the launch of the Psychiatric Intake Response Center, or PIRC, helping patients and their families access appropriate mental health services. We joined forces with the Lakeshore Foundation to establish Children’s at Lakeshore, helping disabled children and adolescents achieve their highest level of independence. The addition of cutting-edge treatments, like cellular immunotherapy and radioiodine therapy to fight cancer and disease, broaden our spectrum of care.

For the ninth consecutive year, we are ranked among the nation’s best children’s hospitals by U.S. News & World Report, with eight pediatric specialty services among the nation’s top 50. NRC Health named Children’s a top-performing hospital for Excellence in Quality & Service, a measure of service culture, loyalty and retention.

We continue our active participation in the national collaborative called Solutions for Patient Safety, making major advances in our quality-improvement initiatives. We also continue to make great strides toward One Patient, One Record, streamlining the flow of care and enhancing communication among our staff.

As we move into the new year and reflect on our successes, we are reminded that our efforts resonate in our patients long after their stay at Children’s, as they grow and develop into healthy adults. Every child should have the chance to pursue his and her dreams, and with deep gratitude to our skilled staff and ardent supporters, we have the chance to provide the finest pediatric health services to all children every day. Thank you.

Yours very truly,

Wm. Michael Warren Jr.
